the occupant of the chair, the governor of west virginia in his previous life and politics, i tell you, he didn't have any trouble making tough decisions, and i'll bet you, you reduced spending a lot more than 6%. and, you know, you survived. you're here. you're respected. you know, we can do this. hey, we've done much tougher things than this in the past. mr. president, i just hope that colleagues think about this carefully. this claret i chart is so import because it looks at the spending and revenue lines of the federal government going back to 1950. 60 years of our economic history on one little chart. the red line is the spending line. the green line is the revenue line. and look what it shows. we got to in 2010 an all-time high in spending for the last 60 years. taking out the effect of inflation so we've got an even steven comparison, and we were at a 60-year high in spending, not surprisings given the dimensions of the financial crisis that we faced. but at the same time we were at a 60-year low in revenue. you got record spending and record low revenue, you got record deficits
